Knowledge session Hortus Malabaricus

During this knowledge session, organized especially for the Botanical Biography, Esther van Gelder, curator of old prints, takes us through the remarkable story of the Hortus Malabaricus.

This twelve-volume botanical work was compiled in the seventeenth century under the direction of Hendrik Adriaan van Reede tot Drakenstein, in close collaboration with the Ayurvedic physician and botanist Itty Achudan and many other local experts from Malabar, present-day Kerala in India. The work contains hundreds of exceptionally beautiful illustrations and descriptions of plants and their uses.

During the knowledge session, several original volumes of the Hortus Malabaricus are laid open. A special opportunity to view this centuries-old botanical heritage up close, learn more about it, and ask questions.

For the Botanical Biography, this afternoon marks the start of the second part of our research. We could hardly wish for a better start.
